Lightworkers and the Devil

Among New Agers, there's a movement known as the "Light Workers" or "Lightworkers." Some though not all Lightworkers believe in a Devil (whom they regard as their enemy, of course).

First, here is some general information by Lightworkers about their movement:

Lightworkers vary quite a bit in their beliefs, so it's probably not a good idea to take anything on the above sites as being representative of all Lightworkers. Some are Christian, while some others are quite anti-Christian (or at least anti-fundy). Most apparently take a fairly liberal ecumenical interfaith view.

In particular, Lightworkers vary in their beliefs, if any, concerning the Devil. Here are articles about the Devil beliefs of some Lightworkers:

Here are articles by some Lightworkers who apparently do NOT believe in a Devil (as a spiritual being, at least):

And here's an article by a Lightworker who not only believes in a Devil, but also believes that the world is ruled by a Satanic conspiracy:

For at least a few Lightworkers, though probably not the majority, such beliefs can take a very cultish form:

I was a bit surprised to discover that some Lightworkers are not at all queasy about hexing, judging by some of the inventory on Lightworker supplies. I would expect most Lightworkers to be horrified.

I did web searches on the strings "Lightworker Satanism" and "Lightworker Satanist" to see if any Lightworkers had much to say about us. I didn't find much. I found a few groups that mentioned Satanists as one of several categories of people not welcome to join. I also found a few -- only a few -- complaints by Lightworkers about fundies who think Lightworkers are Satanists. (As I would have expeted, Lightworkers apparently don't have this problem to anywhere nearly the extent that Wiccans and Pagans do. See my collection of articles To Wiccans and other Pagans and occultists.) I found only one full-blown anti-Satanist diatribe -- written by a person who identifies as an eclectic Pagan, as well as a Lightworker.

So, it would seem that most Lightworkers don't like us but aren't inclined to harass us or preach against us either. The latter is good news. But there are some exceptions.

I also found a satirical article New Age Anonymous: 12 steps for the Recovering New Ager by Blake More. This article defines "Lightworker" as "what New Agers call themselves when they are feeling important." Disparaging comments aside, it would seem that Lightworkers have almost become synonymous with the New Age movement as a whole.
